Sylvia Schramm provides us with a dramatic view of Hamburg’s Niederbaumbrücke, at the beginning of the western “Kehrwieder” warehouse district, where the Alster flows into the Elbe. From this location in Schramm‘s home town, the visitor also has a unique view of the inland port and the Speicherstadt. In the distance you can see the Elbphilharmonie Concert Hall (2007-2016), Hamburg’s new landmark.

In the Hanseatic city, the weather is an important issue, as it is seldom brightly sunny and influences trade as well as the lives of the people. Therefore it determines the mood of this work. The picture axis runs diagonally and the clear lines of the buildings stand against the stormy, reddish clouds. The agitated movement and tension gives a foreboding of the coming drama and captivates the viewer with its picturesque play of colors.
